Bourgogne
Burgundy is the heart of France where it is situated in the middle, a bit to the east. Limited in the north by Champagne and by Lyon in the south this often forgotten part of France hides many treasures.
Only three hours ride from Paris is Dijon, worldwide known for its mustard and for the blackcurrant liqueur Crème de Cassis that is the base of the French favourite cocktail kir. A bit south you arrive to Beaune, a beautiful town with a long history. The colour exploding Hospices de Beaune is one of the oldest wine auktions in the world with the respectable age of 215 years. Today as yesterday the profit is given to charity.
The Burgundy wines are in a class of its own. Unlikely the Bordeaux wines they are mostly made out of one kind of grape. Most of the production is red and white wines with the characteristic of being very light. Classifications like Nuits St Georges, Chablis, Mâcon and Beaujolais the Burgundy wines easily fit on the wine lists of the best restaurants all over the world. Do not forget to order the regional favourite, the splendid beef stew Bœuf Bourguignon at the restaurant!
If you continue even more south you come to Lyon. The third French town is ever since the Roman empire an important hub for European trade and culture. Something is always going on in Lyon! The city has great meeting possibilities and is the host of several of the biggest European fairs and congresses.
Lyon has a strong gastronomical tradition and is the birthplace of many star sprinkled chefs. The mix of old and new that leavens the city can easily be noticed in the restaurants. Try one of the rustique oldfashion restaurants – Bouchon Lyonnais, or limit breaking cuisine moléculaire with fantastic creations.
